Price increase for imported antimalarials since subsidy withdrawal

For years, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation subsidised Artemisinin-based Combination Therapies (ACTs), making imported drugs artificially cheap. When those subsidies were withdrawn, governments could not sustain the tab.

Today, imported antimalarials are expensive and increasingly out of reach for ordinary families. Meanwhile, drug resistance to synthetic treatments is a growing global concern.

The answer may not be a newer synthetic drug โ€” it may already be growing in West Africa. Cryptolepis sanguinolenta has been used to treat malaria for generations. Malaherb is its clinically-formulated, standardised form.

Also studied for

Cryptolepis sanguinolenta is gaining international attention beyond malaria. Researchers in Ghana are investigating its potential against COVID-19. In the United States, it is used by practitioners treating Lyme disease, babesia, and bartonella.

This growing international interest reflects the depth of bioactivity in the plant โ€” and validates what Ghanaian traditional medicine has known for centuries.

Clinical evidence

The science behind Malaherb

Malaherb is not folklore. It is a standardised extract backed by documented research.

Active compound

The primary bioactive alkaloid in Cryptolepis sanguinolenta is cryptolepine, which has demonstrated antimalarial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, and antipyretic properties in research settings.

Clinical study

Clinical data on Malaherb was presented and published in the proceedings of the First International Seminar on Cryptolepis โ€” an early dedicated research forum on the plant's therapeutic applications.

WHO recognition

The WHO has formally recognised traditional medicine as a crucial component of healthcare in developing countries, and has run programmes to identify which traditional systems should be preserved for modern adaptation.
